What Are Our Capsules Made From?
At National Custom Compounding, the majority of our compounded capsules are prepared using high-quality pharmaceutical-grade capsule shells.
Gelatin Capsules
Most capsules are made from gelatin, a purified protein derived from animal collagen. Gelatin capsules are widely used in pharmaceutical preparations because they are:
- Safe and well established for medicinal use
- Easy to swallow
- Suitable for a wide range of compounded formulations
- Designed to dissolve efficiently after ingestion
Vegetarian Capsules
Where clinically appropriate, we may also be able to prepare medications using vegetarian capsules made from hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC), a plant-derived material.
Vegetarian capsules may be suitable for patients who:
- Follow vegetarian or vegan lifestyles
- Have dietary or religious preferences
- Prefer a non-animal capsule option
Other Ingredients
In addition to the capsule shell, compounded capsules may contain:
- Active pharmaceutical ingredient(s) prescribed by your practitioner
- Fillers or bulking agents to achieve the required dose and capsule size
- Other pharmaceutical excipients necessary for the formulation
The specific ingredients used will depend on the individual prescription and formulation requirements.
